Since majority of the comments are about the detective stuff... I'll recommend "ancient china" like. These are old anime btw. 1. Juuni Kokki - not really ancient china, but similar. Some arcs are highly political. 2. Saiunkoku Monogatari - palace setting and political. Can't think of more, but these titles are quite long. Junni Kokki has 45ish episodes, and Saiunkoku Monogatari has 36ish episodes w/ 2 seasons. Drawback is... they don't have a true ending.
