It is about one thing, power. A vengeful perverse grasp for superiority and power over the perceived sinner. We treat forgiveness as a transaction. We withhold it until certain conditions are met or promised to be met. Transactional forgiveness hinges on the assumption that a person will be worth forgiving in the future. Transactional forgiveness is not love. Transactional forgiveness is not even Christian. Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody's business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy.” ― Thomas Merton
