Badak (Indonesian Sarsaparilla Flavour Drink)

Badak is a sarsaparilla cola/lemonade produced by PT Perusahaan Es Siantar in 1916. Originate from Pematangsiantar City, the drink is one of the most iconic drinks in the region of North Sumatra. Badak was produced by NV Ijs Fabriek Siantar (later renamed PT Perusahaan Es Siantar), the first Indonesian soft drink company. This factory was started by Heinrich Surbeck, a chemist and entrepreneur from Hallau, Switzerland who migrated to Pematangsiantar in 1916 with his family, namely Eugen Rosa Otto, Evast, Lydia Rosa Otto and Heedwig Elisa Surbeck. The city was chosen because of its rapid growth, becoming a cargo center between Medan and other cities and the development of agriculture, plus the richness of clear water sources in the area. Apart from producing Badak drinks, Ijs Fabriek Siantar also provides electricity facilities for the surrounding area, something that is appreciated by the surrounding business world.
