My cryptid maps

In my case, it's relatively well-known. I grew up a stone's throw away from the pine barrens and I used to hear stories about the Jersey devil at every campfire. That being said, I know the world has an interesting array of folklore and urban legends. What was yours if you had one?

So, I want to begin by pointing out that Old Irish and Old Welsh are the oldest vernacular literature(no relation to Vulgar Latin) languages in post-Roman Europe. Old Irish(Goidelc) was written before Anglo-Saxon English and Old High German: this created a lot of cognitive dissonance among who I will call the Anglo-British. People may fact check this, but the forces of Oliver Cromwell destroyed many Irish manuscripts, which is part of why our old literature in our own ancient language seems disjointed: even then we still have a wealth of writing dating back over 1000 years.

The "Táin Bó Cuailnge/Cattle Raid of Cooley" is currently known as the national epic of Ireland, Cú Chulainn being a central character, who stood up to the forces of many to defend his province of Ulster in what could be called a civil war. Pretentious people mock in The Táin what they praise in The Iliad, tbh the descriptions of landscapes show Tolkien was influenced by Irish stories even though he insulted them as ugly and chaotic(his English bias, which caught on in the world sadly as Anglo culture gained hegemony.) When not mocked as boring, it is mocked as mindless action. When not mocked, the Scottish and British Unionists try claiming Cú Chulainn was in fact a Pict, and not an Irish Gael, a Pict being associated with Scotland. This gave me the idea to simply write or begin work on a national epic myself, this time with the focus being Fionn Mac Cumhaill who has a lot of stories set in the East, Midlands and South of Ireland.

Fionn is the son(mac) of Cumall, Cumall who was killed in battle by Goll(one eye) Mac Morna. He was raised in the forests of Ireland by 3 bandit warriors, 2 women and 1 man. He was born under the name Demne, but when he fought and killed multiple boys when he was a child himself, he was nicknamed Finn/Fionn, which means blonde/light(the Welsh equivalent is Gwyn.) He would grow up to father many children, the most famous being his son Oisín. 

Over the centuries, Fionn, his son Oisín and grandson Oscar were depicted fighting many battles including the Battle of Ventry defending Ireland against foreign invaders. In later popular folklore, he was depicted as a bumbling giant, but that is not what I would include and I see the comical giant as a different character with the same name. 

My aim is to connect the stories of Finn and his family and warriors into one cohesive epic, in an appropriate method of verse(poetry) to inspire not just the Irish but also the Scottish and Manx who identify most of all as Gaels with a hope for a Gaelic Revival. Before The Iliad and The Odyssey were epics, they were collections of stories that had to be edited with additions and redacted with subtractions to get the polished, finished work of literature. Even if I cannot succeed, my idea may be planted as a seed in the minds of talented people from Ireland and Britain who see merit in my proposed new epic from a recently living storytelling tradition.
