October 21, 1944 #OTD World War II: Battle of Aachen, ends. The city of Aachen, Germany falls to American forces after three weeks of fighting, making it the first German city to fall to the Allies. The Battle of Aachen had cost both the Americans and Germans dearly; the former suffered over 7,000 casualties, while the latter lost over 5,000 casualties and 5,600 taken prisoner.
