Smiling at strangers

I've discovered when traveling, smiling at a stranger signals a welcoming of their advancement towards me, though that was not necessary my intention. In Singapore, I smile at strangers as a sign of politeness without any intent to engage and I would receive the same acknowledgement in return. How often do you smile at others, and what kind of reaction do you normally receive in return? (edited)

I love to smile at people, because it's my way of saying hello. But, I think in places where people usually don't smile at others or only smile at people they know, they kind of look at you as if you're weirdo. 🙈 Though that has never deterred me from smiling. I think it's a beautiful thing when starngers smile at you, it makes you feel that people are doing okay, and world's a better place.
