Why so many Brits are grieving over Queen Elizabeth
Many of my international friends, especially young ones are bemused by a national mourning of a rich old lady. I'll attempt a very quick explanation. Public life in the UK has been in the pits since the 90s. Terrible politicians (stupid, corrupt, narcissistic) an aggressive news media publishing anything to cause distress so they can turn a coin. High crime, relatively speaking, the UKs loss of status globally. Additionally, and a major factor is the ugly spectre of capitalism, people willing to sell their grandmothers if it made them a few £ richer. These ignoble behaviours are heralded as virtues. It hasn't been great. However, in these dark times there was a symbol of noble human virtues; service, duty, charity etc. Elizabeth II was a symbol, and thankfully, symbols don't ever really die. I am not a monarchist, I think it's a charming but outdated idea.
