How many socks are too many socks?

I have 42 pairs of black sock. Some are winter socks other are summer sock, other are mid seasson socks. Some socks are cotton socks other are wool socks others are lycra or nylon socks. So the real question is how many socks too many? And no I don't have any programmer socks, yet.

For most of my childhood any kid I knew only ever wanted to wear white socks anything else would be considered weird. NOW as an adult I'll wear any old things but regionally what was YOUR normal?
