Impactful and heartbreaking death in Anime, across the board? For me specifically, nothing came close or hurt the most than Major General Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist.. The character himself was such an inaugural piece to the development of both Edward (earlier on) and to Roy Mustang. He helped to keep both of them grounded. Once he died Mustang became really unhinged. But the way he went out is the part that makes it absolutely brutal, because we saw behind the scenes how much he dedicated to helping the Elrics and they didn't even know... (edited)
