It was actually started on Christmas Day 1890 in the house of the Johansen family, where the household traditionally gathered on this merry holiday. It was impossible to paint it in one day, so the whole family alternately posed for parts of the work until April 1891. The entourage was recreated completely: the window was curtained, new branches were tied to the Christmas tree, the candles were cut to the right length.... But all the efforts of the family and the painter himself gave the Danes one of the most favourite and popular works, which is now kept in Copenhagen, in the Hirshprung collection.
