So
Kanji because originally japanese was written in it as they did not seem to have a native script so they borrowed the chinese logographic script
Then hiragana and katakana came about since there were limitations to using kanji   so hiragana written with kanji to show different conjugation endings

Katakana developed contemporary to hiragana i suppose, but is mostly used for scientific and foreign names   and onomatopoea

Anyway, it might be a good question as to why we cannot have either of hiragana/katakana

As for why we still might need kanji, that helps distinguish between same/similar sounding words, and helps in readability given you have learnt the kanji already.
