In person I start with small talk, then maybe talk about something shared like the music being played at the festival we're at or if they're from around here etc. Going deep can happen depending on where the convo goes. I met this guy at a bar and we were chatting, started with small talk, then we eventually started talking about religion and exes and stuff like that.
