Well it's more that they influence you and shift your mood, albeit temporarily. If you listen to uplifting music, you become happier. Depressing music, you become sadder. Angry music, angrier (etc). Although some listen to angry music as a form of catharsis. If you find personal meaning on the lyrics, perhaps you could say they talk to you in a wag. I'm sure the song also has a much stronger influence if you resonate with the lyrics.
