At first, it seemed manageable, but it quickly became mentally exhausting. Every conversation felt like I was being pulled into his emotional void. It wasn’t healthy for either of us, and it wasn’t fair to me. 

So, to anyone navigating the online dating scene: please be cautious. Protect your peace and your mental health. Some people sit behind screens, draining others with their unresolved issues, seeking help they can’t find on their own. Don’t feel responsible for fixing someone else’s struggles, especially when they’re not ready to work on themselves. Remember, you’re deserving of relationships that lift you up, not ones that pull you down. Stay strong and protect your energy!

It's often said that we can only be as accomplished as the people we surround ourselves with, so choosing who we allow into our inner circle is a vitally important decision. It's also no small task, nobody wants to be hurt by someone they can't trust.

The company you keep has been shown to impact your success in everything from hobbies to your career. In this post, I will explore some red flags that point to someone untrustworthy who should be removed from, or not allowed into your inner circle.

1) People Who Disguise Insults as Jokes:

We've all encountered this type of person at one time or another, someone whose jokes suddenly start to seem weirdly personal, if not outright mean. This kind of passive-aggressive behavior, often called "negging" or backhanded compliments, can even become bullying and abuse. Such comments center on a kernel of truth, whether an actual failing or just an insecurity, creating anxiety and self-doubt. Maintain firm boundaries with these individuals and don't let them into your head.

2) People Who Refuse to Take Accountability but Readily Blame You:

Known as "blame-shifting," this behavior can be a form of abuse. Even if it doesn’t rise to that level, it’s unkind and shows a lack of integrity. Being willing to take ownership of mistakes is a fundamental part of maturity, empathy, and good character. Those who consistently refuse to take accountability often exhibit fragile self-esteem and a lack of self-awareness, using blame as a defense mechanism to avoid facing their shortcomings.

3) People Who Say They Want the Best for You but Then Work Against You:

This can take many forms, including open sabotage. More commonly, it’s subtle, such as a friend who says they care but then criticizes your goals. Sincerely caring and criticizing aren’t mutually exclusive, but for your emotional well-being, it’s crucial to be careful about how much you let someone like this in.

4) People Whose Words and Actions Don’t Match:

This major red flag can wreak havoc on relationships of all kinds. While cognitive discrepancy, the tension between opposing ideas or behavior that doesn’t match values, is common, it’s not healthy. When actions and words don’t align, be cautious about how deep you allow the relationship to go.

5) People Who Sow Doubt Under the Guise of Concern:

Similar to those who work against you, these individuals subtly tear down your ideas by highlighting negatives under the guise of concern. The people you trust most should build you up and raise concerns without belittling your plans. If someone can’t strike this balance, it may not be wise to share your deeply held dreams with them.

6) People Who Sabotage You, Then Make Excuses:

These manipulative types are detrimental to have around. Trust your gut; if their excuses don’t add up and it seems like they’re undermining you, they probably are. It's better to keep a suspicious eye on them than to continue giving them the benefit of the doubt. They may sabotage others due to insecurities, low self-esteem, or a need to maintain control, often stemming from past experiences.

By recognizing these red flags, you can protect yourself from forming close ties with individuals who may not have your best interests at heart.
