I feel like the men being offended aren't reading the full message, are focused on the flowers part, or just either aren't realizing how much emotional work actually goes into a relationship. 

Men if you have to ask for attention, or to feel appreciated, or to feel loved, the relationship isn't working. No amount of communication will permanently fix the situation. It'll be fixed for a couple of months and then your partner will stop. It doesn't mean they hate you or have negative feelings for you, but the relationship isn't going to work out in the end. One person will always be asking for more than what the other can give. If the other could give it, they would've been giving it from the beginning.
