I hate it when, instead of working, they sit around and talk about people they don't really know in this really annoying manner.. judging people who don't even talk to them

You are absolutely not wrong. Keep separate business and personal relationships. You go to work to earn and make a living for yourself and loved ones, not to make friends (which can be secondary, but to each's own priority)

Socialization at work has actually been getting rarer over time as the workplace had grown, which is entirely why it has become less acceptable. When you only work with three or four people, you get to know them pretty well, and there simply isn't room for a bad boss because no one is expendable.
