The philosophy community, chat, and discussion. Meet new people.

623K SOULS

Hello, thinkers and wonderers! If you're intrigued by the big questions that have puzzled humanity for ages, you've found your intellectual home. This is a space that not only encourages but thrives on meaningful discussion around topics like existentialism, ethics and morality, the philosophy of mind, and the enduring works of ancient philosophers. We delve deep, not just skimming the surface, but exploring the underlying principles and abstract theories that can both boggle the mind and illuminate the soul. Whether you're a seasoned reader of philosophy books or just stepping into this profound realm, this community is designed for you. But our conversations here go beyond theoretical musings. In a world often driven by material pursuits and fleeting distractions, philosophy serves as a grounding force. It pushes us to consider the ethical implications of our choices, challenges us to seek coherence in our belief systems, and encourages us to connect with our deeper selves. If you're pondering existential questions, wrestling with ethical dilemmas, or dissecting theories of consciousness and self, this is your forum for unraveling those complexities. So, whether you're a student of philosophy, a professional philosopher, or simply a curious individual captivated by life's ultimate questions, you're welcome here. Let's explore these mind-bending topics together, sharpen our critical thinking skills, and perhaps even inch closer to a greater understanding of life itself. With every discussion, we enrich not just our intellectual understanding, but also deepen our emotional and spiritual perspectives.

People say they are honest if they don't lie.

But honesty is as much about what you DON'T say, as what you do. The words you hide behind versus the words you use. There is an old joke about the English and the Americans being separated by a common language, but the same is true for every one out there, regardless of language. It's hard to say what we think and feel.. so many masks we are expected to wear for this group or that, between friends, family and the "outside world"... Social taboos and expectations. So many people are lying so much of the time because that is what is EXPECTED of you to fit into 'polite society'. Honesty does not need to be crass, harsh, or cruel but we're so used to protecting everyone's feelings that we lost touch with our own. Say what you mean. Mean what you say. Live like you mean it. Sin like you mean it. If the things you feel are a shame to you, ask where that shame is coming from and face it. Get therapy, get support, but never lie to yourself and never be dishonest with others.

The key to love is to love back. Enthusiastically embrace people who love you. Reciprocate the same level of energy, affection, respect, and attention.

Aristotle

Aristotle suggested we constantly re-evaluate the greatest and highest frame of reference good we can think of at the time, and we will gain new frames as we grow wiser. What do you think of this?

More from John Stuart Mills

"Each of us knows that some of our opinions are wrong and none of us know which they are for if we did, they would not be our opinions." Another to go along with it "There is nothing more dangerous than the deep slumber of a decided opinion."

Do you believe in reincarnation? If so, how do u explain your own concept of reincarnation.

Note: This question is not for all. And I don't intend to create religious or spiritual debate.😇 We all have different beliefs and I respect that☺️

Hmm...

Maybe you were sent to Earth to admire beautiful things, write bad poetry, make silly playlists, take your time drinking delicious tea in the kitchen, savor your favorite dessert, be kind and maybe cry a little when you see lonely old people in the park.

Mills vs Kant

"He who saves a fellow creature from drowning does what is morally right, whether his motive be duty, or the hope of being paid for his trouble; he who betrays the friend that trusts him, is guilty of a crime, even if his object be to serve another friend to whom he is under greater obligations." So Kant would say the man who saves another from drowning for the sake of anything other than to do good is not morally good. But Mills separates the motive behind an action from its moral qualifications.

John Stuart Mills

"The multiplication of happiness is, according to the utilitarian ethics, the object of virtue: the occasions on which any person (except one in a thousand) has it in his power to do this on an extended scale, in other words to be a public benefactor, are but exceptional; and on these occasions alone is he called on to consider public utility; in every other case, private utility, the interest or happiness of some few persons, is all he has to attend to." By this I believe he means we shouldn't always be thinking of how every action we take could help or harm others but live our lives as normal prioritizing being good to ourselves and doing good when we have the chances too.

More Mills

"if it could be doubted that a noble character is always the happier for its nobleness, there can be no doubt that it makes other people happier and the world in general is better because of it, utilitarianism therefore could only attain its end by the general cultivation of nobleness of character."

Kant

I think Kant takes a bold view in stating that you should "Act only according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law" and further not taking any steps back from his position no matter what the circumstances are asking if you take a step back for one reason where do you draw the line which I think is very commendable. You get the sense that Kant really cares about morality and that it means a great deal to him.

Is life a game?

Conceptually I mean. A game doesn't have to have a win condition, nor does it need to be fair, effort doesn't always mean success, some people already have main character syndrome but what's to say they're not allowed to think that way? I think in a way this idea is quite liberating, if a little dystopian.

More on Mills

He didn't believe happiness to be a life of rapture, "but moments of such, in an existence made up of few and transitory pains, many and various pleasures, with a decided predominance of the active over the passive, and having as the foundation of the whole, not to expect more from life than it is capable of bestowing." He says a life composed as such is worthy of the name happiness.

Capitalism/Corporatism and Communism, can both put themselves on a rocket, warp-speed to Mars and leave the rest of us alone, so tired of the lies and deceit, as they both target the most vulnerable and desperate people. The only difference is the methods they use to achieve power.
