Red Book of Westmarch

An updated pic of all my Tolkien books. Including a first edition copy of The Silmarillion that my old man gave to me as a teenager, and that helped spark a life long love for Tolkien, and fantasy in general. I can't help but think of him when I look at these. I miss that grumpy old guy!

I tried to be book-accurate but it was challenging as there aren't many passages referring to Morgoth's physical appearance.

Gandalf, a Maia, killed a Balrog. Ecthelion, an Elf, killed three Balrogs as well as Gothmog, lord of the Balrogs. 

Ecthelion overcame a greater foe while not being what is considered an Angel in comparison. Pretty impressive.

What is that difference between the movies and the books who surprised you about the lord of the rings?

I've been struggling with grief recently, in June, my wife passed away to a long term illness, and I've struggled with loneliness, with feeling surrounded by darkness and soul-crushing loss. It is in these moments, when Tolkien's themes of the triumph of light over darkness in the end, no matter how strong that darkness seems, have been instrumental in me retaining my sanity. I know that "Night is passing. Day shall come again."
