Octopuses and fish often team up, each bringing a skill to the table. The fish are scouts. The octopus is the lockpicker, pulling prey from tight spaces. Then something wild shows up on camera. An octopus winds up with one arm and snaps a quick jab at a fish partner. No bite. No chase. Just a clean slap. Sometimes it makes sense. The fish was freeloading or blocking. A sharp smack says move it, buddy. Nature can be strict about teamwork. But other times, the slap looks random. No food nearby. No real threat. Just a pop and the fish flinches. Scientists think it can be a way to punish, to keep order, or maybe to blow off steam. We see a flash of personality in that moment, and it’s hard not to feel something about it. (edited)
