My First Book

I've been meaning to read something by this guy for a while. I know he's won the Bram Stoker and has a reputation for being one of the best horror fiction writers around right now.

I can only speak for this book, but I truly feel like hours of my life were stolen and I wish I could get them back. I pushed through to the end because I was convinced there would be something to save the work, but no. 

It was the worst horror novel I've ever read. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that.

The entire time I spent reading was filled with vocal comments coming from my mouth without anyone listening.  I'm in disbelief on how juvenile and flimsy the plot was, but the greatest sin is how devoid of horror the book was. It promotes itself as a work of horror, but I kid you not, there is not a moment of terror in the entire work. It is a work of metafictional layers and each one is more irredeemable than the one before it. This book read like an AI imitating a bad SCP article and wishes it was House of Leaves so badly. 

Do not spend your time on this.

Mr. Tremblay, if you happen to read this, there was a single noteworthy and interesting part of that book. It was the scene with the teacher scribbling on the paper and finding an image inside. It was actually so good, I don't know why you didn't open the novel with it. It felt genuine and mysterious. It also felt like it came from a place of truth, a real memory changed into something a little more than it was, and that is a hallmark of good writing. 

But the rest of the book was truly a slog.
