A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME by Stephen Hawking

“Can I not do with you as this potter does, O house of Israel?” declares the Lord. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.”

A lump of clay cannot shape itself into a beautiful vessel. The potter spins the wheel, and his hands give form to the clay. When the clay resists, it breaks, crumbles, and falls apart. It is only when the potter is in control that the clay can achieve the beauty, strength, and purpose the potter envisioned from the very beginning.

Father, act in my life as You see fit. You are my Creator and Guide, and I place my life in Your skillful hands. Holiness is a lofty ideal. In fact, it is completely impossible for us to be holy on our own. Yet, the holiness of God requires holiness from us. How do we attain it? By allowing God to impart His holiness to us according to His grace. Just as He exhorts us to be holy, He also provides the holiness we need when we surrender to His will, living according to His Spirit.

Sometimes, we choose to remain silent because we do not want to say something foolish or offensive. There is wisdom in tempering our speech when we know our words could dishonor God and lead us into sin, especially in the face of adversity. But in our silence, God prepares us to speak His truth when He needs us. So let us use our moments of restraint to seek both God’s words and the right time He chooses.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for restraining my tongue when my words are not pure. Although there is comfort in silence, I know You do not desire that I remain silent forever. Grant me wisdom so that, when the time comes to speak, only honorable and truthful things may come from my lips. In the name of Jesus, amen.

To me, William Somerset Maugham is like a surgeon with a scalpel, masterfully peeling back the layers of the human soul. I first fell in love with his storytelling in The Painted Veil, but after finishing The Moon and Sixpence, this book has officially claimed its spot on my "must-read-again" list.

What makes this book so powerful is the third-person perspective. Maugham captures the spirit of an artist so vividly that I found myself almost forgiving Strickland’s sheer ruthlessness, seeing it instead as the raw, untamed essence of art. As a woman, I was also stunned by how strikingly he depicts the female characters—each one feels incredibly alive and complex.
There’s Mrs. Strickland, whose pride was wounded more by her husband leaving to "paint" than if he had simply left for another woman. Then there’s Blanche, who claimed to hate Strickland but ended up following her deepest desires into self-destruction. And finally, Ata, the strong island girl who looked after him until the very end. To Strickland, they all seemed like mere passersby in his life, though I can't help but wonder if he loved Ata a little more, simply because she allowed him the freedom to be himself.

One of my favorite parts was the chapter about Abraham, the brilliant doctor. Walking away from a prestigious career to settle for a low-paying job on a remote island might seem like a failure to the world, but like Strickland, it was an act of immense courage. It’s the courage to define "success" on your own terms, following your heart rather than society’s expectations.

The title itself says it all. We are all so busy staring at the "Sixpence"—the practical comforts and responsibilities of life—that we often forget to look up at the "Moon", the true calling of our souls.

As I finished the book, I couldn't help but ask myself “Do I have the courage to let go of worldly prestige to claim my own moon?” Madmen like Strickland and brave souls like Abraham are the raw truths of this world—and I believe they are still out there among us. What are your thoughts about this book? Have you ever felt like leaving everything behind to chase your own 'Moon'?
