Is making a protoworld a useful idea?

I am making various (con)languages more or less related, this morning I was strucked by the question up above. (I know is better to do that, if my point is going to work them as natlang but, I fear my projects will drastically change after months working on them)

I've been working on a language for a few months now. The main goal of it is to be something that dragons could realistically speak, so it's heavily pharyngeal, though they also have access to bilabial sounds.
