1.) Good boots/shoes. Wear them in as well. Blisters are agony if your footwear isn't right. 2.) start smaller, follow well used paths to begin with in case you do run into trouble. 3) if you're hiking in hot weather take water, it might weigh a lot to start with but as you use it up you'll realise how grateful you are to have it. And finally don't rush yourself, make sure you give yourself more time for each hike if you're new so you can rest and recover at times.
