The first Hispanic American awarded the Medal of Honor

Pvt. Joe Martinez was the first Hispanic American awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and sacrifice in WWII in helping drive the Japanese off of Attu Island. He single handed captured a mountain pass and killed more than 30 enemy soldiers. He was also the first Private in WWII to be given the award and remains Weld county, Colorado's only recipient of the Medal. Due to the prejudice of the time being Hispanic he was denied burial at Arlington National Cemetery his family chose his home as the next best place. He is buried in the small cemetery in the tiny town of Ault, Colorado.
