Yesterday was a blessing . My day started with sensei’s thoughtful question, “Are you feeling okay?”. I wondered what if he knew the truth of the story. And yeah, when I asked my friend, she said that he kept mentioning your name in your absence🤣Another thing is that when I was eating with my friend, suddenly the cafe staff came to our table and gave us souvenirs (my lifesavers). She was the one who always noticed our (foreigner) presence in the cafe and talked to us. And the last one is that when I met my tutor at the corridor, she invited me to hang out with her as we hadn’t talked about our lives since everyone got busier this year.

Rashbehari Bose (Indian freedom fighter from my state) with his Japanese wife Miss Toshiko Bose,who introduced Indian cuisine in Japan

Rash Behari Bose was a revolutionary who played a significant role in India's freedom struggle. He was deeply affected by the Partition of Bengal in 1905 and quit his job as an officer of the British Raj to become a revolutionary. Bose was involved in several conspiratorial strategies to overthrow the British, including the attempt to assassinate Lord Hardinge, the then-British Viceroy of India. For this, he was sentenced to death. However, he escaped to Japan and continued fighting for India's independence. In 1915, he arrived in Tokyo. There, he connected with influential Pan-Asian leaders who supported the Indian cause, including the renowned rightist politician Mitsuru Toyama. The British were so fearful of him that they resorted to hiring detective agencies to track him down or even assassinate him. Then, he moved to the vibrant commercial district of Shinjuku. Amongst the maze of tiny shops and narrow alleyways, he found shelter at the Nakamuraya bakery owned by the wealthy Soma family. The Somas, supporters of the Indian cause, bravely hid Bose in the basement of their quarters for months. Gradually, he got close to the family and shared his favourite recipe for Indian chicken curry. The family adored the recipe, and it soon became their favourite. Bose married Toshiko, the eldest daughter of Aizo Soma and Kotsuko Soma, in a simple ceremony in July 1918 when marriage to foreigners, especially to one in exile, was considered the worst case by Japanese society. Toshiko bravely took on most of the household responsibilities so that Bose could focus on pursuing Indian independence. Tragically, Toshiko died from tuberculosis in 1925 at 28. Devastated by the loss, Bose threw himself into his work. Two years later, he partnered with his father-in-law to open a small restaurant above the bakery, serving Indian -style curry and rice named – Indo Karii. The locals fell in love with Nakamuraya's curry, which became even more popular than the bakery's famous custard buns.

Any good apps out there?

So I've been doing my best to learn Japanese, but this app doesn't allow many speech opportunities in it. I was thinking of passing for the unlimited but if I can't practice speaking Japanese. I don't think it's worth it. There doesn't seem to be any good options to learn Japanese but speaking for phone either. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great👍🏿 I just don't want another case like when I was hearing a different language through doulingo and I could only read and write the language but not speak it.

Woe unto my keyboard

I have an android phone and have been using the Japanese 12 key keyboard as I learn Japanese on Duolingo. Been fine in the early stages, but starting to move into words that use katakana and it is really a struggle. Part of this is due to the order Duolingo teaches things. But, not being able to select katakana directly is not helping. Just looked at the godan keyboard and it doesn't seem to be much better for me. Some words are fine: America for instance is spelled just how I would expect, I can type it in hirigana and chose the katakana option. But for Brazil I spent a long time working out if it was Barazila, Berazila or Burazila. With hirigana, if I get confused or need a refresher, I can easily look at the symbols to see where I've gone wrong. I suppose I'm looking for something like that for katakana. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions ありがとう！
