The Girl Who Chased the Sun

Long before cities and farms, Nations and faiths, Perhaps before language, Certainly before poetry, There was a girl who chased the sun. At dawn she would rise and start walking east and when she grew tired, rest. On berries, roots and leaves she would feast then set off walking west. When it left she would set her camp and head upon the the same dreary hill, Although the moon beamed down upon her bed she dreamed of sunshine still. Through wind and rain she stayed her course pursuing she knew not what. Though at times her joy had a scorching force to her it never felt too hot. A woman she remained the invariable traveller roaming this way then that, One summer dusk she met a fellow wanderer and her belly grew fat. But the stranger was not so disposed to sun that with her he would stay, Though she would've liked a daughter or a son a herb carried them away. Though this brought her searing pain and gloom It was nothing when compared, to the day that formed some dark sphere of doom, the vision of her love impaired This life of quiet, thoughtful pace graced her with many years more, Than others of her tribe and race - she lived till nearly thirty-four. To the last she stared up at the skies, no wonder on what was to come. With a blissful smile she closed her eyes and caught up with the sun.
