I guess the first thing to account for is whether the mechanism exists with the intent of creating isolation or whether it happens to do that because of incompatible environmental factors. Someone may be isolated unintentionally as a result of their race, but conversely may avoid people intentionally thinking they will be disliked without any confirmation.
