So I just watched Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero last night. I haven't really been keeping up with DBS because like always, it becomes too much to follow and keep track of. But when I heard they announced this movie last year, I REALLY thought this was going to be Toriyama taking the piss out of Marvel movies and crapping on the oversaturated superhero movie genre, especially since the antagonists are supposedly superheroes, and Goku has been called the east Asian Superman so many times now. (And yes, I know My Hero Academia and One Punch Man also exist.) And (mild spoiler here) while I would've picked a far better title, I'm pleasantly surprised the movie wasn't that. It was actually pretty wholesome and had a good message. What I took from it was, "power is pointless if you're not using it to help, care for, or protect others." And I guess, you can argue that's what Dragon Ball Z/Super has always been about. But in an age of cynicism, seeing a movie with a positive message and being a good father and using power to create good in the world, was refreshing and felt nice. I've always wanted power because I was born on the bottom of Western society, despite coming from a First World country. I've always wanted power, because I felt powerless for so long. (Sometimes still do.) But the movie make me think. "What good is power is you're not using it to help others?" Power for the sake of power, is what villains usually want. So it's got me thinking. I need to have others in my life that I care about first. Then work on getting stronger, so I can help them get stronger too. And protect them, like Piccolo and Gohan did in the movie. That's the unintentional message I took away from the movie. Was not expecting that. Especially since (SPOILER) Goku and Vegeta are barely in this.
