You practice, and keep up the practice of controlling your thoughts. It's a skill and it has to be practiced and maintained and developped. If we're not getting better, we're getting worse. Come up with new things to tell yourself, better things, practice being present and deliberate, practice meditation, lead a disciplined life, exert your body, the act of putting yourself through discomfort is the best way to develop control over your thoughts
