Palestine and Israel
I do not condone either side, I condem the suffering on both sides. That being said, people need to look beyond the current situation. The situation will go on for decades; Hamas' allies will keep supplying them enough to keep the fight going but never enough for them to win, Hamas' tactic is prevocing a overwhelming response from Israel so they turn supporters into fighters and by standers into supporters. Israel shift in politics from the birthrate of the ultra orthodox will continue to move to the right and more hawkish. There tactic is to prove to Hamas they can never win by showing how overwhelming the power differential is by doing massive responses. The only way this ends is with a horror so bad, both sides eventually turn to negotiation. Supporting one side or the other will only perpetuate the sufferin. No matter how justified you feel in your support, you don't know who's children will burn and scream after that first shot is fired

I agree, but I'm afraid I'm not so optimistic. The political systems in Israel and the Palestinian territories seem geared towards empowering only the most self-destructive, knuckle dragging extremists. My gut instinct is that the only way peace will come is if those political systems are overthrown first.

What was the moment that made you love history?
For me it was when I was in a class with my favorite professor. It was a class entirely about "The Wealth of Nations" and all we did was read and then debate the meaning of the book. It really gave me a very intense love for everything economics post-enlightenment. There is nothing more that I... read more

Where the River Met Her Words Marina Tsvetaeva’s quiet 1936 refuge in Moret-sur-Loing, wrapped in poetry and longing
Stumbled upon the house where one of Russia’s greatest poets, Marina Tsvetaeva, stayed in 1936. Quiet, poetic corner of France with echoes of her sharp, aching verses.

A couple of notes about Cinco de Mayo.
1. It's not something celebrated by all Latinos/as/xs, since it's specifically related to Mexican history. 2. Heck, it's not something celebrated by Mexicans. At least, not as fervently as it is celebrated in the US. 3. The main thing is that May 5th commemorates the Battle of the Mexican Army... (edited) read more

Have you ever heard of the Greek hero Bophades?
He was one of the heroes who fought in the Trojan War. His story is similar to the story of Achilles. When he was a child, his mother held him by the groin and dipped him in the river Styx, as to make him invincible in battle. However, just like Achilles, he had a weak spot. Because his mother held... read more
