Some films don’t just age—they wait for you. Raanjhanaa was one I missed in its time, buried under the noise of new releases 

Raanjhanaa (2013): Why I Think I Missed a Masterpiece

Raanjhanaa, directed by Aanand L. Rai, is a film that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll—especially if, like me, you initially overlooked its brilliance. At first glance, it might seem like just another Bollywood romance, but it’s so much more: a raw, tragic love story steeped in obsession, politics, and unrequited passion.  


A masterpiece? Not perfect—but unforgettable
Why It’s a Masterpiece?  
1.Music by A.R. Rahman – The soundtrack is sublime. From the soulful Tum Tak to the haunting Piya Milenge, Rahman’s compositions elevate every emotion in the film. The music isn’t just background—it’s the heartbeat of the story.  

2. Dhanush’s Stellar Acting – His portrayal of Kundan, a man hopelessly in love (or obsession), is *phenomenal*. The way he balances innocence, intensity, and later, despair, makes his character painfully real.  

3. Swara Bhaskar & Sonam Kapoor’s Performances– Swara, as Bindiya, delivers a heartbreaking performance as the girl who loves Kundan unconditionally. Sonam, as Zoya, is perfectly cast—her detachment and eventual guilt add layers to the narrative.  

4. Brutal Yet Honest Storytelling – The film doesn’t romanticize toxic love; it  exposes it. Kundan’s obsession destroys him, and Zoya’s indecisiveness has consequences. The ending is devastating but fitting—love isn’t always fair or beautiful.  

Why Did I Miss It Earlier?
 
Perhaps because the film’s release time, young when it released, and later, the endless stream of new OTT content buried it under fresh releases. But Rahman’s timeless songs—Tum Tak, Piya Milenge, Raanjhanaa—stayed with you, lingering in playlists for years, whispering that this wasn’t just another soundtrack but the soul of a deeper story. The melodies haunted you until you finally gave in, revisiting the film with older, wiser eyes—only to realize it was never just a love story, but a brutal, beautiful tragedy you needed time to truly feel.  

Final Verdict: Raanjhanaa is a flawed masterpiece—brilliant in its music, performances, and emotional depth, but brutal in its honesty. If you dismissed it earlier (like I did), it’s worth revisiting with fresh eyes.  

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5) – A tragic, unforgettable experience.
