Evil Dead 2013.. in my opinion, one of the best in the Evil dead franchise. I can see why the original is cool in a way but this one is much best than the newest one 🤷🏻‍♀️

For me: ⭐️⭐️⭐️. To reiterate, I did not grow up watching the Evil Dead film and only recently (about a few months ago) did I watch them on my own. If your curious Evil Dead 1 (⭐️⭐️1/2) and Evil Dead 2 (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2).

Now I did see Army of Darkness before the previous 2 many years ago and in theaters when I didn’t know Army of Darkness was the third film in the trilogy. I think I remember enjoying it fine then. Here and now about the same. Bruce Campbell does steal the show in his performance and the film still has it creative yet wicked sense of humor with its unique effects.

I do think it leans in too far with its comedy than its horror aspect and I would’ve like some of the characters to be as memorable or at least ones I cared about. Also it probably feels a tad too safe in its story involving the “chosen one”. Still I think it’s more of my problem than perhaps the film, because it relies heavily on its comedy and Campbell’s performance that I should’ve watch it with an audience likely with those that are fans of Evil Dead franchise. 

I still recommend this film, but only if you watched and like the previous Evil Dead films.

For me: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2. I loved this film back then. Now I like it though I guess grown up me isn’t quite into it as I used to. I still have a soft spot for it though. Along with the animation, at its time, and its comedy, what was so successful was just the extensive cast they got for the film. Sometimes it works like Steve Carrell as Hammy the hyper active squirrel or Nick Nolte as Vincent the bear thanks to the design and voice looking very intimidating. Other times you hear mainly the actors being the characters instead of the characters being themselves like Ozzie being played by William Shatner. Doesn’t mean their not bad by any means it’s just you see and know the actor/actress more than you know the name of the character based on their voice.

Animation is fast pace and fun with a fun climax at the end and similar to the music from Disneys Tarzan where they have Phil Collins singing original stuff, Over the Hedges music comes from Ben Folds or Ben Folds Five where some of its original and some existed but lyrics were changed to fit its PG rating like Rockin the Subburbs.

If I had issues I guess it’s safe story and not going futher in its comedy like satirizing more of the suburban lifestyle.

I do think this is fine for kids and teens more than I think for adults if you haven’t seen it. It’s definitely not like a comedic or deep masterpiece of animation like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, or How to Train Your Dragon, but if you wanting to watch something animated and simple, Over the Hedge isn’t a bad one to check out at least once.
