Modern tellings of the norse gods often give them clear and definitive outlines. It gives them titles and domains of power. Thor being the god of thunder is a good example. However, compared to the greeks and romans, the norse gods didn't have domains and realms of power and perview they were much more mundane in a sense. In the Edda, Thor didn't control lightning or thunder nor was he even called the god of thunder. He was a craftsman and protector, the patron of freemen and farmers. He didn't hurl lightning like Zeus. Lightning was commonly said to be sparks flying off his anvil and thunder the echos of his hammer blows. He was loud and boisterous and with a fierce temper. Thunderous and storm like one might say. Yet because of this he is now called the God of Thunder (Not discrediting Marvel's contribution to that either). My question is thus: is our modern perspective of gods of other ancient religions warping the way we reconstruct the religion as a sort of false path, or is it more akin to a kind of evolution, the old ways simply growing and adapting to a modern world? Do perhaps the gods themselves change from the way they are percieved? As always this post is intended for good discussion and not intended to offend. I'm dying to know what other norse-pagans believe as unlike with Christianity there's no nearby temple or place of worship for me to meet others and discuss this.
