What range of emotional reach do they have to give to your beloved animal? For me, it’s actually a meaningful indicator. The way a person interacts with my cat says a lot about their emotional range and how naturally they give affection, not just to people, but to the small, quiet lives we share the world with. I’ve realised I sometimes use my cat as a way to scope people out. Her reactions, her instincts, the way she observes someone… it gives me a sense of who they are at their core. There’s something about how a person treats an animal, especially one that means so much to you. It can reveal their worldview, their softness, and their curiosity about life’s little wonders. Affection for animals is a big one for me. It helps me understand how someone sees the world, how they care.

First, I do not let my pet decide how I view my partner. I should be more upfront about these boundaries if they become a deal-breaker for a commitment. If my pet is vital to me, I shouldn't date someone who cannot tolerate my pet. Because, I do not wish to make it into a choice between who's more important to me. I'll have to be clear with myself that my pet stays, and I will have enough energy to tell my date about the importance of my pet and that it has to stay along on our journey. She gets to decide for herself, we are unbound and can separate or go on another date. 💡
