For me, the lesson continues to be that Americans largely have no clue how basic civics works, and that years of bad faith politics and bad policy have rendered this piss poor education outcome. As Franklin said, this is only a republic if we can keep it. Which means that the relationship between those that govern and the governed was never meant to be this strained. And that we have always had the role of the watchers. And either we're either too tired or perpetually never engaged enough to keep the train on the rails. We're often too busy or too distracted. Not sure what the remedy is for this.
