Don't Squash, Just Watch: Why Spiders Are Friends, Not Foes

​Let's be honest: spiders get a bad rap. For many of us, the sight of one scuttling across the floor is enough to trigger a full-blown panic. We see their many legs, their unusual eyes, and their skittering movements, and our immediate reaction is fear. But what if that fear is just a big misunderstanding?
​The truth is, we're often scared of spiders simply because we haven't taken the time to learn about their behavior. We see them as creepy, unpredictable intruders. In reality, they are fascinating, shy, and incredibly beneficial creatures that play a vital role in the environment around us. The vast majority of the spiders you'll encounter in your home are completely harmless to you. Their main goal isn't to scare you; it's to hunt the actual pests like flies, mosquitoes, and roaches. They are nature's own pest control service, working for free!
​Their strange looks and silent, deliberate movements can be unsettling, but they are behaviors perfected for survival, not for startling humans. A spider in the corner of your room is not plotting an attack. It's patiently waiting for a meal, building an intricate web, or simply trying to stay out of your way. When we react with a shoe or a scream, it's usually because we've startled them, and their quick retreat is just them trying to escape a creature thousands of times their size.
​Next time you see a spider, try to pause for a moment before you react. Watch it. Notice the complex patterns on its back or the incredible engineering of its web. By replacing our fear with a little bit of curiosity, we can start to see them for what they truly are: odd, yes, but also harmless and helpful neighbors who just want to be left alone.

There was a little jumper living on this red plant holder in the yard. Fortuitously I noticed it was locked in on this fly and I caught it pouncing on its dinner. You can see the very small movements before it jumps. 🕷️

Finally got myself a curly hair tarantula! Just finished upgrading its tank to give it way more room to roam - went for a natural setup with live plants and everything. Still waiting a bit before moving them in so the plants can settle and grow in properly. Can't wait to see it explore its new space soon!

I'm sitting in my car with the windows down and I just noticed this tiny little spider crawling along the door. They wouldn't stop moving, making it very difficult to get a clear photo. I enhanced this the best I could with the picture editing app on my phone.

Found a rather large Male Linx Spider this morning on my walk around the site.

People reacted so well to Car Spider, here's another little one from this past summer. At the far end of one of the local ponds is a stone bridge. I stopped there to meditate and found this little one on a nearby stone.
