How does anyone learn a new skill in this day and age. It's daunting to give so much time and effort when I have so little to give. Without seeing immediate returns I struggle to stay with it. Am I just lacking resolve?

There is no finish line when learning new skills, so it's more important to be going through the process of learning than it is thinking about how far you've gone (or haven't). I got a Unicomp Model M, manufactured in 2014 if you believe the manufacture date on it. Not an IBM but it gets the job done. Types like a dream, and all the keys work just fine.
