Extending shield design

I got bored and thought this would be a cool project. I want to make a expanding shield to possibly use as a prop. There's 3 design criteria. 1. It must have a radial action to expand. (I want it to resemble a hoplite shield) 2. It must be able to take a beating. (at least a baseball bat swing in collapsed form) 3. Must be a somewhat manageable weight (<25 lbs) I think I'm going to use a similar action that the Fletcher Capstan Table used but with plates that interlock. But I doubt that it will be able to take a decent impact. I literally just started this so this is all i have drawn for now. I'm completely open to suggestions for anything.
