I want to tell you guys about Whang-od, the last tattoo artist of the "mambabatok" tradition in the Philippines. She is first in a thousand years to break the patrimonial tradition of tattooing in the Kalinga tribe and has now taken only women apprentices. A total badass. Whang-Od is 106 years old an absolute legend here in the Philippines. Her tribe is called Butbut and live in the Cordillera mountains up north. They used to have headhunters who would get tattooed by the mambabatok whenever they'd accomplish certain things. We haven't had head hunters for a few decades now but she's still continuing the tradition. The tattooing itself, they typically use a thorn from a pomelo or calamansi tree as the needle and for ink, they use soot from the bottom of a pot mixed with oil. Then they basically hammer that thorn with a stick into your skin. They have designs that are reserved for only tribe members and others reserved for tribe members who accomplish certain things. Although, tourists are only allowed to choose from a pre-approved designs.

Pretty sure I saw a documentary, it wasnt about her but she was in there, not 106 year old yet, and did a tiger tattoo to a woman to give her strenght in her endeavours? π€ It's possible I'm wrong, it's been a while π€£ But definitively badass life story, thanks for sharing!
