As the tragic incident (r**e and m**de* of a 31-year old trainee doctor) at the R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata has taken the country by storm, I share this throwback image captured during the protest on the Nirbhaya case at the Jantar Mantar in Delhi, on 22 December, 2012. As a photography freak during the final year of my college (Bachelors), I reached there a week after the inhuman criminal act. With my recently bought Canon EOS 1100 D, I captured some of the moments of the protest which was taking peacefully. Taking scolding from some senior photographers out there and observing people also taking a moment to cash on the commercial items being sold there, the real trouble came when ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the BJP) activists came in huge numbers. They went to break barricades, making the police and paramilitary troops spring into action. One of my feet got stuck in one of the fallen barricades and a Lathi hit my back, but not so badly. Thankfully I was wearing a sweatshirt and inner. Plus the damage by the lathi was intended for someone else, so yeah. Thank God for some mercies. From there, I went to the South Block (at Central Delhi), which had a sea of protestors and along with the police, there were members of the Asmita Theatre Group who stood there as guards so that the people wouldn't cross their sanity and go berserk. Thankfully, I had my college ID card that made me cross the police barrier as a media person so that I could capture the 'sea' well. 12 years since then, now that we also talk about harassment of men, did we actually learn our lesson in terms of women's safety? Do these events tell us that our own citizens are way more dangerous than our external enemies? #india #delhi #kolkata #protest #camera #photograph #photo
