Holism—what is it?

Holistic care, or Holism is definitely a buzz word in the mental health community, but what does it actually mean? Holism means that a person can not be divided into different parts. Whereas Sigmund Freud believed that the personality was made of separate parts (Id, ego, superego), the idea of Holism states that the whole person experiences life as a singular being. The mind and body cannot be separated, neither can the person be separated from their environment. Think about—not one of the processes going on within us or around us occurs in a vacuum. We experience everything wholly.

This is why practitioners use aspects of holism when working with clients. While a person should be looked at as a whole, we as humans compartmentalize things which is naturally categorical. Thus "breaking down" someone into different aspects of themselves can be extremely helpful in looking at the whole. It goes without saying that each person is different and will respond to different things. The beauty of being human is unique in nature as we do not experience similar/the same event in the exact same way.
