Half Life 3 can never happen. It will never ever live up to the expected hype that people expect it to live up to. HL2 was a jump in tech and way you play games. Same as HL 1 was a jump in how games tell stories. So people expect HL3 to be another revolutionary jump that will again redefine the way you play games. They tried that with Half Life the VR game, it was good, but VR just like 3D TV's never really took off. It became and still is a small niche market and it's been over a decade now. Remember Duke Nukem Forever? How that was being promised to be the greatest thing ever? The game title fame/hype became its undoing. There was too much expectations to deliver a product to would even come close to matching them. So the Duke Nukem follow up failed. Valve doesn't want that on their books.
