I object to this study headline...
https://scitechdaily.com/horrifying-new-study-indicates-that-popular-sugar-substitutes-worsen-your-memory/amp/ I suspect that the rats given artificial sweeteners were simply less motivated to find the reward due to regular exposure to the reward, which made it appear that they have "poorer memory" than the rats drinking plain water. Here's why: - the control group, plain water, should have included an additional regular sucrose (sugar) group, to compare it's effects against *artificial sweeteners. - artificial sweeteners are designed to satisfy sugar cravings with less ingredient than regular sucrose. It makes sense that rats given only water, would crave the "reward" more than rats already exposed to a type of reward. * Yes, I know stevia comes from stevia plant, but it functions the same as any other artificial sweetener. - lastly, I suspect that the publisher misunderstood the intentions of the experiment, or intentionally wrote a misleading headline to generate more interest, rather than to honestly communicate their findings to the public. I'll have to find the original journal from the JCI website to confirm my suspicions. But this study probably shows that our brains can adapt to and normalize reward after too much exposure, NOT that artificial sweeteners "reduce memory retention." - I suspect that this was added intentionally to generate more views, which does a disservice to the scientists and all the dead rats that they killed after the experiment.
