I love me some central air conditioning

Willis Carrier was inspired on a Pittsburgh train platform I'm 1902 and invented the first crude air conditioner by passing dry air through fog. Stuart Cramer later coined the name "air conditioner" when he installed similar devices in his textile plants to make the work environment more productive. Frederick Jones created the first portable versions for use in military field hospitals. He's responsible for several inventions, including the refrigeration units used in transport trucks. William Cullen invented refrigeration back in 1740s Scotland. God bless all these innovators.

Also, side note about William Cullen inventing refrigeration in the 1700s. It's crazy how many modern things were invented in Scotland or by Scottish people (telephone, penicillin, mammal cloning, MRI, toaster, ATM, color photograph, flushing toilet...). They're like the China of the west for inventions lol

What's weird is Willis Carrier invented AC to control high humidity (he had a printing plant where the ink was smudging). In 1911, he described air conditioning as โ€œthe artificial regulation of atmospheric moisture.โ€ But eventually companies realized people only care about the temperature. I really appreciate this post! I read a fascinating blog series a few months ago about the evolution of indoor climate if anyone else is interested (not just cooling but heat and efficiency) https://constructionphysics.substack.com/p/the-evolution-of-indoor-climate-part
