It elevates the audience that it is written for, as they picture themselves in the same scenario and know they would be much smarter. It also encourages audience engagement, as they yell at the characters for for their actions, as if not fully realizing the character can't hear them. This isn't limited to horror movies either. Watch a professional wrestling match, the moment the referee turns their back to the bad guy for an insignificant reason. While the bad guy pulls the set of "brass knuckles" from his boot, the audience, either live or on the other end of a television monitor goes wild. It's programmed audience engagement.

From a film perspective, the characters in scary movies often make illogical decisions because it creates tension and enhances the story. Horror movies are meant to scare the audience and create a sense of danger, and if the characters always made smart decisions, the story might not be as interesting or exciting to watch. The audience wants to be scared, to feel on edge, and to root for the characters to survive against all odds.these choices are often made to serve the plot and enhance the suspense and tension of the story.

What's a good horror movie to you?
