At the core of the philosopher Anaxagoras's thought is the rejection of genesis and decay, as he states, "...nothing comes into being nor perishes, but is composed and decomposed from pre-existing entities" (DK 59B17). In other words, Anaxagoras does not accept the possibility of creating beings from the mixture of Empedocles' four fundamental roots, but believes that each individual substance existed from the beginning in the world. The reasonable questions that such a statement might provoke are answered with another fundamental principle of Anaxagoras, according to which every being in the natural world contains, in small proportions, pieces of all natural substances, thus forming a microcosmic image of the macrocosmic universe. This universal mixture is a primordial state of indiscriminate mixing of seeds, the basic building blocks of reality, which are infinite and invisible, yet function as organizational patterns—blueprints—potentially embodying the essential components of all material substances.
