Of course rockhounding is a sport!
My typical rockhounding expedition consists of me walking into the wilderness in the desert SW, backpack full of water, high protein snacks, first aid and survival equipment. I come across irresistable finds of rose quartz, or traces of turquoise, or petrified wood, or rocks with green crystals .....so many rocks! I fill the main compartment of my backpack, then the inside mesh compartments, then move to the exterior compartments and pouches. I filled every single bit of my backpack. I keep telling myself, "No more! No more!" And, "It's too heavy! I can't walk anymore with all this weight! My legs can't take the weight! My back can't take the weight! I can't make it back to my car! Am I going to have to use my GPS to request help?" Then I remember that I have overalls on. So many, many pockets. I fill them all until the rocks are spilling out. I keep telling myself, "No more! No more! This time I really mean it, no more!" But I see more, and I must have them. I am practically crawling with all the weight now, but I think I can just make it back to my car before dark. If I don't, do I have a space blanket with me? A hat? Something warm to put on? "Eureka! I have my hooded sweatshirt tied around my waist, and .....it has pockets!" I must have more rocks! I put the sweatshirt on and fill all the pockets. Now I'm crawling but I think I can still make it back to my car. I consider getting rid of some of the rocks. But, no! I can still fill the hood of my sweatshirt! And I do fill it to overflowing. I finally make it back to my car as the sun is setting, and as I fumble in my backpack for my keys, the two young men on dirt bikes ask me if I'm ok. I feel the weight of all my precious finds pulling me to my knees, and I respond, "I'm wonderful!" Has this happened to any of you?

Any fellow rock hounds on here?
These are beach pebbles I collected along the Chesapeake Bay. A lot of quartz, carnelian, and sandstone.
