Is it a good thing so many people keep getting cats?

This has been on my mind since watching a documentary on Australia's feral cat problem. More and more people seem to keep getting cats these days and the big problem is, the cats get fed at home but then are let out to roam. Cats being natural hunters aren't exactly going to ignore their instincts and fun for human morality reasons. So when they do hunt they're just doing it out of instinct / fun and not for actual survival reasons being food. Wouldn't it then mean at a certain point people are, by proxy, contributing to natural wildlife decline in their local areas if their cats roam and do hunt? After all, the only thing that acts as a natural balance to this are cars. Don't seem to be many animals that prey on cats.
