Usually have around four tasks in progress at a time, so that there is no idle time when one task is blocked. Just work on the other problems while waiting for ideas, instead of wasting hours feeling stuck with a problem. Don't put tasks on ice before reasonably finished. Then no need to get back into a large problem just to fix a small thing, but you also don't get stuck in endless tasks of much lower priority. If something is easy to do and needs to be done, just do it instead of wasting the same time thinking about it, then redo it better if it was not good enough. Whenever you start making excuses for a certain solution, think about how it would feel to explain that to a customer, then figure out a way to redo it the right way that has no compromises and needs no excuses. Many C++ programmers use the "it's the C++ way" or "because it's optimized" excuse when something is dangerous and unreadable for no reason, then you show them readable code that is free from bugs and many times faster using the right abstractions.
