Bottle Baby Bentley on the Mend!
Bentley is a Whitney Heeler, Half Australian Cattle Dog and half Great Pyrenees. Yesterday and last night was stressful beyond belief. Bentley was the only puppy to pull through of a group of 5 after they suffered fatal food poisoning. (I'll explain if someone asks, long story). Then yesterday he lost his appetite, got listless, the swelling in his hind legs got worse, and he lost so much weight in just 12 hours I could feel every bone. We had to give him Ready Cal, which is a high calorie paste for crashing kittens/puppies, but we ran out. So we gave him sub cutaneous fluids for dehydration and I mixed his formula with molasses and salmon fish oil pet supplement. I stayed up till 4:30 AM this morning feeding him with a syringe every 10 minutes. He also started on antibiotics last night as well. The difference today from yesterday is crazy! He finally accepted his bottle with formula and less molasses around 4am and ate an ounce, then at 5 ate another ounce from his bottle and fell into a restful sleep on my chest surrounded by a bunch of my other dogs. Now, at noon, he is starting to explore his toys for the first time and making play motions at me when I talk to him. I still plan to take him to the vet on Monday for other possible issues that need addressed and to try and find out what had made him sick so we can head it off sooner if it happens again. If he makes it to the age of solid foods and has no special needs himself, he will be trained as my service dog. #homesteading #puppies #animals #mentalhealth
